BARCODE INVENTORY CONTROLA lot of companies have inventory systems that are made piecemeal as the company grows. I know that ours did. We started off as a family-run company long before the concept of barcode inventory control was even thought of. We had no inventory control systems. We would simply look and see what was on the shelf, and when we ran out, we would order more.
That was before we started to really prosper. We used to do all of our inventory accounting longhand. Everyone used to, and many still do. Even after the first personal computer came out, barcode inventory control made very little sense for many companies. The software was cumbersome, the computers were slow, and computer literacy was at such a low rate among business people that it wasn't worth the hassle. The problem is that now everything is computer operated. All of our invoices are done on the computer. This makes having two systems a nightmare. When I kept track of our inventory longhand, we would then have to transfer everything to the computer system. The typing and double checking would take hours.
What is so great about the barcode inventory control is that it does it all automatically. You can simply take a barcode scanner, scan each of the items on the shelves, and keep account that way. All of the information is automatically transferred into the barcode software system. It really is an amazing time saver. When we were selling a few dozen products, it didn't matter. Now, however, we are selling hundreds and hundreds of products. We sell more every day, and have even opened up a few subsidiary stores. The barcode inventory control is necessary. It allows us to keep track of the sales being made in all of the stores, as well as figuring out what new orders need to be made.
If you have never worked with a barcode inventory control, I highly recommend switching to it. It may not sound like an essential, but it is. It is not just a matter of saving a little bit of time. The barcode inventory control saves us massive amounts of time, and increases our efficiency as well. Before we introduced inventory control barcode, we used to run out of products before we could restock them. This cost us money, and even lost us customers. Now, thanks to the barcode system, we are always on top of our orders. That makes a big difference in retail.
