The world of basketball has had its fair share of superstars but none more so than Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson. As far as international recognition goes, the flair of these two is admired around the world. To be a star basketball player is to be an entertainer. The statistics speak for themselves and the two stars have been an inspiration for the next generation who dream of setting records of their own.
Michael Jordan was an extremely gifted athlete with a natural talent which led him to be dubbed the greatest basketball player ever to have lived. The 6' 6'' shooting guard from Brooklyn astounded spectators with his incredible leaps and dunks over fifteen seasons of play. His peak career was with the Chicago Bulls from 1984-1998, helping them to win six NBA championships. Another highlight was when he was part of the so called Dream Team, which won gold at the 1992 Olympics.
Awards were heaped on Jordan, for his excellent performances and contribution to the game. He was the highest scoring player in NBA history. He finished his playing career, with the Washington Wizards from 2001-2003. During a brief retirement from basketball, after the murder of his father and gambling debt problems, he had a stint as a minor league baseball player with the Chicago White Sox. He didn't really shine and soon missed being a basketball player, so he returned to the game he knows best.
The towering 6' 9' figure of Magic Johnson thrilled spectators for 13 seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, 1979-1991 and 1996. During his career, the Lakers won five NBA Championships. He was also part of the 1992 Olympic Dream Team, along with Jordan. Named Earvin, Magic was the nickname given to him at a very young age because of his prowess on the court as a basketball player. He also briefly coached the Lakers in the 1993/1994 season.
After retirement, Johnson concentrated on his successful business interests and also took part in several charity basketball matches. He had announced that he is HIV positive in 1991 and he formed his own charity foundation to help awareness and raise funds for research into the condition. He has also written a book about HIV and Aids. Johnson continues to enjoy a loyal following and has faced his ordeals with great courage. He will always be an undisputed superstar basketball player with an undiminished love of the game.
